Silkie bantams are one of the oddities of the poultry world.  Their hairlike plumage is absolutely unique.  Along with five toes they also have mulberry coloured skin, face, comb, wattles, bones and meat.  The Silkies’ temperament is as soft as their appearance; they are pleasant, low-key and gentle.

 


 

BUFF PLYMOUTH ROCK

Alert and upright the Buff Plymouth Rock has a clear and smooth buff colouring from head to toe.  A deep chest with bright red comb and wattle ensures they stand out in a crowd.


 

Araucana

ORIGIN        -    CHILE

EGG COLOUR    -    BLUE / GREEN

Alert and active Araucanas are prolific layers of strong-shelled, green or blue eggs.  Their name derives from the Arauca province of Northern Chile where the Spanish invaders failed to conquer the local people.

PEKIN BANTAM – GOLD PARTRIDGE

This bold bird is a genuine bantam breed, very old and having no real relationship to the large breed of Cochins.  It was imported from Pekin in the middle of the nineteenth century, hence its name.  Heavily feathered feet make it a firm favourite.

OLD ENGLISH GAME (duckwing, spangled)


CLASS        -    BANTAM

ORIGIN        -    ENGLAND

EGG COLOUR    -    TINTED

The large fowl was known as the Pit Game until the suppression of cock fighting in 1835.  This ancient breed is extremely colourful and has a proud bearing. Although the bantam is a recent creation, large fowl standards apply.


 

Copper Black Maran


CLASS        -    LARGE FOWL

ORIGIN        -    FRANCE

EGG COLOUR    -    DARK BROWN

Taking its name from the French town Marans, this bird is made-up of many breeds and was introduced to this country about 1929.  The Copper Black has black plumage with a beetle green sheen and copper hackles.  Prized for its extremely dark brown egg.

A native New Yorker the Silver Laced WyandotteIt is a well balanced and graceful bird with a rose comb and metallic green sheen to the deep lacing on the feather.

BRAHMA - COLUMBIAN

Named after the Brahmaputra River in India, the Brahma is a sedate and gently bird with a pee comb and beetle brow.  A favourite of Queen Victoria, these birds became very popular in the late 1800s.
